Set against the foothills of the Jura, Lagnieu lies at the interface between the Bugey region and the Plaine de l’Ain, known for its cereal crops and industrial park. Bordered by the Rhône River, a natural barrier between the Ain and Isère departments, the commune boasts an exceptional setting and a wide variety of landscapes.
Formerly the economic capital of a châtellenie, Lagnieu still retains traces of its medieval past, notably the Château de Montferrand, built in the 15th century on the authorization of the Duke of Savoy and now listed on the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments.

A true town in the countryside, Lagnieu boasts a dense and diversified community fabric, with over 90 active associations in the area, supported by high-quality facilities. The emblematic swimming pool (listed as a 20th-century heritage site), the main stadium, the padel courts, the skate park and much more, provide something for everyone.

Lagnieu’s geographical position, diversity of landscapes and proximity to the Via Rhôna make it a real city for cyclists, from the most novice to the most experienced.
So, whether you’re more of a stroller along the paths of the commune’s magnificent landscaped park, or daring enough to try mountain biking in the Bramafan woods, you won’t remain unaffected by Lagnieu’s charm.

Île Chambod-Merpuis: a natural resource of happiness!
Clear water, enchanting landscapes: from shore to shore, the Île Chambod-Merpuis is a delight for families and hikers alike! Located in the heart of the Ain Valley, between Poncin, Hautecourt-Romanèche and Serrières-sur-Ain, Ile Chambod-Merpuis is above all 20 hectares of unspoilt nature and a 15 km2 navigable stretch of water. On the program: cycling, hiking, boating, pedalos, paddles… but also an interpretation trail that allows you to discover the 10 remarkable sites of the Haute Vallée, while touring the island.
